DIY Skincare Routine

You may have heard of a skincare routine before, but what is it?

A skincare routine is a series of steps on your skin to help you maintain healthy-looking, beautiful skin!

I recommend doing a skincare routine at night before you go to bed. This is when your skin repairs itself and creates new cells for the day ahead of time. We must give our bodies this chance!

I also recommend having a separate skincare routine if you’re going out in the sun because ultraviolet rays damage the skin and cause cancer.

How do you choose a skincare routine? Many different routines work for different people. Find what’s best suited to your needs!

This section will provide you with seven easy ways to do this in the comfort of your kitchen.

Oil cleansing!

Oil cleansing is essential because it removes all bacteria from your skin so that you can begin the process of repairing it.

I recommend using a cleansing oil to remove all your makeup and grime so that way everything is off your face!

You’ll want to choose an oil-based cleanser as the first step of cleansing because these types of products can dissolve anything on your skin, including water-proof mascara.

What to do: Mix all of the ingredients in a glass bottle. Shake before you use it to mix the oils and store in a dark, clean cupboard for up to 12 months!

Water Cleanse

Water Cleansing is one of the first steps in any skincare routine. It gets rid of dirt, makeup and other impurities on your skin that can cause problems if left there for too long.

I recommend using a gentle cleanser like Castille soap to cleanse your face every day!

DIY Castile soap cleanser

Fill a small bowl with an ounce of water, then add one teaspoon of liquid castile soap and olive oil.

Stir the mixture until it’s combined! You can use this cleanser just like your regular face wash by putting some onto your palms and massaging them over your face.

One thing to note is that Castile soaps are not effective for removing makeup but can remove dirt and other debris. That’s why you should use an oil cleanser first😉

Rose and Castille soap

Add 1 cup of rose water to a small bowl. Add ½ cup of Castille soap or other pure, vegetable-based soap and one tablespoon of glycerin. Mix well to combine.

Apply this mixture with cotton balls or a clean face cloth to your skin, then rinse with warm water.

Repeat daily, either in the morning or evening, before you go to bed.

If you have sensitive skin, I recommend using a milk cleanser to calm your skin down because it’s creamy!

Milk contains lactic acid, which dissolves dead cells on the surface to reveal new, healthy skin. You can use rice milk, almond milk or coconut milk as a cleanser if sensitive skin!

DIY Milk cleanser for sensitive skin

Pour one cup of your chosen type of milk into a small bowl and add two teaspoons each of raw honey and olive oil.

Stir the mixture until it’s combined, then gently massage it over your face for about five minutes.

Herbal Steam Facial recipe

Bring two cups of water to a boil.

Add one tablespoon each of chamomile and calendula flowers (or lavender if you can’t find chamomile and calendula) to the boiling water.

Cover the pot, remove it from heat, and let it sit for ten minutes.

Add one teaspoon of rosemary leaves to the pot, cover it again and let it sit for five more minutes.

Strain the mixture into a bowl to remove the herbs, then pour it into a sterilized container.

Dip a clean washcloth into the mixture and apply it to your face, or pour some liquid into a bowl and lower your face over the steam.

Sit and breathe in the herb-scented steam for ten minutes with a towel over your head.

Tone

Toning is the next step in a skincare routine!

Toners are used to close up your pores and remove any dirt or dead skin cells that may be left on your face after cleansing.

I recommend using this with cotton balls because it will absorb all of the excess product. They’re also great for removing oil-based products from your face before you apply your daily moisturizer.

DIY Rosewater toner recipe

Fill a small spray bottle with water, then add five tablespoons of rose petals and one tablespoon each of raw honey, aloe vera juice and rose oil.

Shake the mixture vigorously and use it as a toner after you cleanse your face! Be sure to store it in the fridge to keep it fresh.

DIY Chamomile toner recipe

Fill a small spray bottle with water, then add one tablespoon dried chamomile and two tablespoons of witch hazel, aloe vera juice and chamomile oil.

Shake the mixture vigorously and use it as a toner after you cleanse your face! Be sure to store it in the fridge to keep it fresh.

Witch Hazel DIY recipe

Mix one part water with aloe vera juice and two parts witch hazel in an empty spray bottle.

Add two drops of lavender essential oil or another essential oil with antiseptic and astringent properties to the mixture, then shake it well before applying.

Exfoliate

If you’re looking for a simple, quick way to remove dead cells and give your skin a fresh glow, then try using an exfoliating scrub!

Exfoliation is not only great for your skin, but it also helps you get rid of any dirt that might be stuck in your pores to prevent breakouts.

There are many different types, but they all do the same thing- exfoliate and remove oil from pores.

Using this method in your DIY skincare routine will help improve blood circulation, which helps stimulate collagen production underneath your skin to make it plump and smooth.

DIY body scrub recipes

Sugar Scrub recipe

Mix one cup of white or brown sugar with three tablespoons of oil (olive, jojoba, almond, grape seed) until it becomes a thick paste.

Add two drops of peppermint essential oil for its cooling effect on the skin and help reduce inflammation!

DIY Sea salt scrub

Take one tablespoon of ultra-fine sea salt and add two teaspoons of olive oil.

Stir the mixture until it’s combined, and massage it over your face for about a minute. You can do this in the morning or at night!

Be careful not to rub too hard, so you don’t scratch your skin.

I recommend using a scrub once or twice a week because exfoliation can irritate if you use it too often!

Serum and treatments!

There are different types of serums that you can use for your DIY skincare routine, but the most common is a vitamin C serum.

Vitamin C is an excellent antioxidant that helps your skin stay clear and bright. You can use a vitamin C serum before you apply your moisturizer in the morning or as an overnight treatment to make sure your skin gets the benefits of it.

However, if you want to use it as a treatment, I recommend you put it on your skin at night and wash it off in the morning!

DIY Vitamin C serum

Put one tablespoon of aloe vera gel and vitamin c in a small dish and add three tablespoons each of witch hazel extract (or rose water) and water.

Stir the mixture until it’s combined, then gently massage it over your face for about one minute. I recommend using this treatment once every other day to prevent irritation!

Moisturizing

Moisturizers are used to retain the moisture in your skin so that it doesn’t look dry and flaky throughout the day. This is especially important during the winter months when there is less humidity in the air!

Choose a moisturizer with an SPF of at least 15 so that your skin is protected from the sun.

diy moisturizers

DIY Cocoa butter moisturizer

Take one tablespoon of sweet almond oil and add two teaspoons each of cocoa butter, coconut oil and shea butter to a small bowl and microwave until melted (about 30 seconds).

Stir half a teaspoon of vitamin E into the mixture, then pour it into an empty bottle or jar and allow it to cool.

Massage the oil onto your face after you cleanse in circular motions for about a minute, be careful not to tug too hard on any dry skin!

You can store this moisturizer at room temperature, but I recommend storing it in the fridge if you plan to use it frequently, especially during the summer months, to prevent it from melting.

DIY Aloe vera moisturizer

Take one tablespoon of sweet almond oil and add half a teaspoon each of vitamin E and shea butter to a small bowl and microwave until melted (about 30 seconds).

Stir in two tablespoons of aloe vera juice, then store in a bottle or jar.

Massage the oil onto your face after you cleanse in circular motions for about one minute, be careful not to tug too hard on any dry skin!

You can store this moisturizer at room temperature, but I recommend making small batches to prevent contamination due to the addition of water in the form of aloe vera juice.

DIY Coconut oil moisturizer

Take one tablespoon of mango butter, add half a teaspoon of vitamin E and coconut oil to a small bowl, and microwave until melted (about 30 seconds).

Stir in two tablespoons of aloe vera juice, then store in a bottle or jar.

Massage the oil onto your face after you cleanse in circular motions for about one minute.

Phew, now that all of those DIY recipes are out of the way, we can move on to sunscreen!

Sunscreen

Sunscreen is vital because UV rays cause damage over time, leading to premature ageing, so make sure you’re protecting your beautiful skin whenever you go outside, whether it’s sunny or cloudy.

Sunscreens should have an SPF between 15 and 50, depending on how often you plan on being exposed to the sun.

Conclusion

Your DIY skincare routine doesn’t have to be expensive and complicated.

With my DIY recipes, you can make your moisturizers and serums with simple ingredients which are probably already in your kitchen!

So to recap, to create a great skincare routine, you should start with cleansing, toning, and occasional exfoliating, then treat (vitamin C serum) and lastly moisturize with sunscreen!

The most important skincare is eating healthily, drinking lots of water, and getting enough sleep because topical skincare is the second step to maintaining healthy skin!
