So you want to know more about natural treatments for black hair, and maybe you’re also on a tight budget? As a natural hair girl for the past two years, I’ve got some answers!
In this blog post, we’ll talk about natural treatments for black hair with limited funds. We will discuss things like what products work best and how to make them.
It’s time to get your long locks back in shape without breaking the bank!
Prepoo treatment!

The first step to getting healthy hair on a budget is the Prepoo treatment.
As you know, ‘prepoo’ refers to “pre-shampoo”, and this particular product helps to condition your scalp as well as soften new growth so that it can be more manageable during wash day.
Depending on how dry your hair is, you will want to leave the prepoo on for at least 20 minutes.
Prepoos are typically where you will find most of your budget-friendly options, especially if they’re made with cheaper ingredients like coconut oil or coconut cream!
DIY Slippery elm recipe
Add two tablespoons of slippery elm to ½ cup of water (Use less water to get a thicker paste). Simmer on low flame for 3 minutes.
Allow to cool, add two tablespoons of coconut oil and apply to damp hair.
DIY Coconut milk recipe
Add ½ cup of coconut milk to a bowl(store-bought works best because it tends to be thicker). Microwave for 2 minutes and apply to damp hair once it’s a bit cooler.
I recommend using a plastic cap and covering it with either a shower cap or t-shirt to keep in heat while also ensuring that the product doesn’t drip everywhere.
After you’ve let your prepoo sit for at least 20 minutes, it’s time to shampoo!
As always, be very gentle with your hair when washing out the treatment – don’t scrub or pull on any knots. Try using a natural bristle brush to help distribute the oils throughout all of your hair.
Benefits of a Prepoo Treatment
Prepoo treatments are so important because they condition the scalp and prepare it for your subsequent treatment!
The purpose of most natural hair treatments is to moisturize, but if you have a dry or flaky scalp, that will prevent any product from getting into your hair strands – which means no moisture!
By preparing our scalps for the subsequent hair treatment, we can get better results because our strands will be more receptive.
Shampoo!
Shampooing is an essential step for healthy black hair. It’s pretty simple: you can’t treat your hair if it’s not clean.
Always use a shampoo that is sulfate-free and paraben-free, as those ingredients can dry your hair and cause breakage. I recommend buying shampoo as natural as possible, such as organic coconut oil castile soap.
You can also make your shampoo with products you probably already have in your kitchen!
Castile soap shampoo recipe
You’ll need two parts castile soap and one part water.
Mix two parts castile soap, one part water in a container. You can keep it in your shower for several months before you have to make more!

Scalp scrubbing is your friend!
This is another essential step for healthy black hair, and it also helps with dandruff and dry scalp!
Exfoliating your scalp regularly will help give your hair a clean start. You can make an exfoliating scalp scrub with castile soap and sea salt or use any exfoliating shampoo you want to get this done!

Conditioner is a must!
When it comes to healthy black hair natural treatments, conditioners are essential for hydration and preventing breakage.
A deep conditioner gives your hair the moisture it needs and makes it soft, silky, and shiny!

DIY Avocado deep conditioner recipe
You’ll need one avocado and one-third cup of olive oil
Mash the avocado until it is smooth and creamy. Then mix in with the olive oil to create an even mixture.

DIY Banana deep conditioner recipe
You’ll need two bananas and one tablespoon of honey.
Mash the bananas until they are creamy and smooth, then mix the honey to create an even mixture. Apply generously all over hair (this can also be done as a treatment for your whole body).

Soak the fenugreek seeds in water overnight. Then grind them up in a blender with a cup of coconut milk. Blend to form a smooth paste and strain with a cheesecloth to remove the shaft.
Add one tablespoon of honey and apply generously all over hair (this can also be done as a treatment for your whole body). Leave on for 30 minutes before rinsing out with warm water.
Water is your friend!
Staying hydrated is essential for black hair natural treatments. Water keeps the scalp healthy, reduces dry skin and dandruff, and hydrates the hair.
Make sure you are drinking at least eight glasses of water per day!
Moisturizing with water!
After rinsing out your deep conditioner, allow your hair to air dry or wrap in a microfiber towel till it’s about 90% dry. Now it’s time to style your hair.
The best moisturizers I have found are natural plant-based gels like Aloe vera, flaxseed and xanthan gum.
Aloe vera gel recipe
You’ll need one part aloe vera gel and one part glycerin
Mix the two ingredients in a bowl and store them for up to three weeks.
Xanthan gum gel recipe

Mix the ingredients in a bowl, allow to aerate for 2 hours before use
Flaxseed gel recipe

Grind the flaxseeds in a coffee grinder or blender and add them to a bowl with five tablespoons of water. Stir the mixture for three minutes, then allow it to sit on the countertop overnight.
Strain with cheesecloth to separate the gel and store in an empty shampoo or conditioner bottle.
After applying the natural gel, follow up with an oil like castor oil, coconut oil, or olive oil to seal in moisture and add shine.
If your hair dries out quickly, use natural butter like shea butter or cocoa butter to seal in the moisture and keep your hair moisturized for longer.
Maintenance!
One of the best natural hair maintenance tips I have found is using a silk scarf to wrap your hair at night. Silk scarves prevent breakage, protect your hair from the elements, and reduce frizz.
Regularly spritz your hair with water throughout the week and follow up with an oil or butter to keep your hair from drying out.
Ayurvedic hair masks!
If you want to give your hair extra TLC, try doing a natural hair mask at least twice a month. There is no better way to keep your scalp and hair healthy than by using natural ingredients.

Henna amla hair mask
You’ll need one part henna, one part amla powder.
Mix the two ingredients in a bowl and allow the dye to release for 8 hours before applying.
Apply the mixture all over your hair, leave for three hours, then rinse with warm water. For best results, use a deep conditioner to follow up the henna mask.
Aloe vera and coconut hair mask
You’ll need one part aloe vera powder, two parts coconut milk
Mix the ingredients in a bowl. Apply the mixture all over your hair, leave for three hours, then rinse with warm water
Fenugreek Neem hair mask
You’ll need one tablespoon fenugreek seeds, one tablespoon neem powder
